Our story and our names

Who started Danyel and Marli?+

Linda "Cricket" Witt, in December 1980. Cricket loved makeup and never left the house without it. Her skin didn't love it back. Everything she tried broke her out, so she stopped waiting for someone else to fix it and spent two years working with skin care chemists and a color lab to build her own line.

What was she trying to make?+

Makeup and skin care she could wear every single day without a reaction. Her rule was simple: if she and the women around her could wear it daily without breaking out, anyone could. She also wanted foundation that stayed put through Southern heat and humidity and sat on top of the skin instead of settling into lines by the end of the day. Her makeup artist asked, "You don't want much, do you?" She didn't budge.

Why "Danyel" and "Marli"?+

They're family names, and the most personal thing about the brand. Danyel was the name Cricket chose for a son, and Marli the name she chose for a daughter. She held on to both her whole life. When she built the two lines she cared about most, she gave them the names she loved most, and every product still carries them.

Why two brands instead of one?+

Because they do different jobs. Danyel is the makeup: face, eyes, lips, and the tools to put it on. Marli is the skin care underneath it. Same founder, same standards, built to work together.

Who runs it now?+

Still family. Cricket founded it, her daughter Kimberly Stahlin carried it forward, and her granddaughter Racheal Thornbury is now the third generation. Same family, same rules Cricket started with in 1980.

Is this a salon brand?+

It started there. Danyel and Marli have been used by salons, spas, and professional cosmetologists since 1980, and you can now shop them directly here.

Mature skin

Why do these formulas work so well on mature skin?+

Because they were built for skin that reacts. Skin gets drier, thinner, and more sensitive with age, and the usual suspects (fragrance, dyes, heavy mineral oil, harsh actives) start causing problems they never used to. Cricket designed around that from day one. Four things make the difference:

  1. Nothing to react to. Every Danyel and Marli product is fragrance-free, Danyel is mineral-oil free, and Marli is dye-free. Fewer irritants means less redness, stinging, and flaking on skin that's already sensitive.
  2. Moisture that stays. Marli is formulated with hydrators and barrier-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, panthenol, aloe, and emu oil. Well-hydrated skin looks smoother and feels more comfortable, and makeup goes on better over it.
  3. Makeup that doesn't sink in. Danyel foundations were designed to sit on top of the skin rather than settle into fine lines, and to hold up through heat and humidity. That's the difference between looking fresh at 4pm and looking like you've been wearing makeup since 7am.
  4. Color that flatters instead of fights. Soft, blendable blush and shadow shades that move with skin instead of caking on it, and many do double duty (blush as eyeshadow, shadow as liner or brow color), so you use fewer products.
So are your products anti-aging?+

We don't promise to turn back the clock, and we'd be suspicious of anyone who does. What we promise is honest: products that feel good, wear well, and don't irritate mature, reactive skin. Proven, not trendy.

My skin changed and my old makeup doesn't work anymore. Where do I start?+

Start with skin, then base. A gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer from Marli give makeup something smooth to sit on. Then choose a Danyel foundation in a lighter layer than you think you need, and add color back with blush. Less product, better result.

I get facials, laser, or injectables. Can I use these?+

Many of our customers do. Because our formulas skip fragrance and dyes, they're an easy fit for an established routine. Always follow your provider's guidance on when to resume skin care and makeup after a treatment.

Will your foundation settle into lines?+

It was designed not to. The formula is built to stay on the surface of the skin. Tip: apply a thin layer with a damp sponge, press rather than rub, and set only where you need it.

Sensitive skin and ingredients

Is it really safe for super sensitive skin?+

Yes, and it's our favorite question. This line exists because its founder had skin that reacted to nearly everything. Every formula leaves out the usual troublemakers: no fragrance anywhere, no mineral oil in the makeup, no dyes in the skin care. It's all dermatologist-considered, and it's been worn daily by sensitive-skinned customers and used in salons since 1980. Everyone's skin is its own thing, so if yours is very reactive, patch test anything new on your jawline for a day first. We think you'll be pleasantly bored by the results.

What does "fragrance-free" actually mean here?+

No added fragrance or perfume, including the "natural" essential oil kind. Fragrance is one of the most common reasons products irritate skin, so we leave it out entirely.

Are your products cruelty-free?+

Yes. We have never tested on animals and never will.

Where are they made?+

In the USA.

Is Danyel mineral-oil free?+

Yes, every Danyel product. Mineral oil can feel heavy and make makeup slide, so we leave it out.

Are all your products paraben-free and sulfate-free?+

Not every one, and we'd rather tell you than bury it. Each product page shows the full ingredient list, and a free-from badge only appears when that specific formula earns it.

What are the key ingredients?+

It depends on the product, but you'll see these a lot:

INGREDIENTWHAT IT DOES
Hyaluronic acidDraws in and holds moisture
SqualaneLightweight oil that softens without feeling greasy
Panthenol (vitamin B5)Hydrates and helps skin feel calm and comfortable
AloeSoothing, lightweight hydration
Emu oilRich, nourishing moisture for dry skin
Vitamins A, C, and EAntioxidant support for skin and lashes
Where can I find the full ingredient list?+

On every product page, in the Ingredients section below the description.

Danyel makeup

How do I find my foundation shade?+

Match at your jawline in natural light, not your wrist or the back of your hand. Each shade lists its undertone (cool, warm, or neutral) on the product page. Still stuck? Give us a call and we'll help you match.

How long does the foundation last?+

It was built to last all day and hold up in heat and humidity, which is saying something coming from a Southern company. A thin layer and a light set in the T-zone will get you the most wear.

Can I use blush on my eyes?+

Yes. Our blushes double as eyeshadow and can be pressed along the lash line as a soft liner. Several eyeshadows work as liner or brow color too. Fewer products, more looks.

Is the mascara okay for sensitive eyes and contacts?+

Yes. Sensitive Eye Mascara is made for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, and it conditions lashes with panthenol. XLXL is our high-volume, high-length option. Both are fragrance-free.

Can I use eyeliner on my waterline?+

The iLite Waterline Liner is made for exactly that. For the rest of the lid, use the Sensitive Eye Eyeliner. Both are made with sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers in mind.

Do I need the brushes?+

Not to start, but they help. Good tools blend better and use less product. The Hypo-Allergenic Foundation Sponges are a great first pick if you're only getting one.

How do I clean brushes and sponges?+

Wash brushes weekly with a gentle soap and lay flat to dry. Replace sponges regularly, since they hold onto bacteria over time.

How long does makeup last once it's opened?+

As a rule of thumb: mascara and liquid liner about 3 months, foundation about 12 months, powders and blush up to 2 years. If it smells off or changes texture, toss it.

Marli skin care

What's a simple Marli routine?+

Three steps covers most people. Morning: cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. Evening: cleanse, treat, moisturize. Add a mask once or twice a week if you want extra. You don't need ten products. You need the right four and a routine you'll actually keep.

Where should a first-timer start?+

With the basics: a Marli cleanser and moisturizer. Get those working for your skin, then add a treatment or a mask.

What does the Collagen Lifting Facial Mask do?+

Skin feels noticeably tighter and firmer immediately after use. It's a great pick before an event or a night out.

What is the Panthenol Treatment?+

A hydrating treatment built around panthenol (vitamin B5) that professional cosmetologists have used for over 40 years. It helps skin feel calm, soft, and comfortable.

Can I use Marli around my eyes?+

Each product's How to Use section says whether it's meant for the eye area. When in doubt, pat gently around the orbital bone and keep masks and cleansers out of the eye itself.

How long until I see a difference?+

Hydration shows up fast, often after the first few uses. Give any new routine about four weeks of consistent use before judging it, since that's roughly how long skin takes to turn over.

Do you have body care?+

Yes. SkinRenew Body Lotion is our everyday body moisturizer, made with the same fragrance-free standards as our face care.

Do any products contain SPF?+

No. Finish your morning routine with a sunscreen you like, and let it set for a minute before foundation.

Using Danyel and Marli together

Do I have to use both?+

No. Each line stands on its own. They just work best together, because they were built by the same person with the same rules.

What order do I put everything on?+
  1. Marli cleanser
  2. Marli treatment or serum, if you use one
  3. Marli moisturizer
  4. Sunscreen (morning)
  5. Danyel foundation
  6. Danyel blush, eyes, and lips

Let moisturizer sink in for a minute or two before foundation. It helps makeup sit smoothly and last longer.

What's the best way to take makeup off?+

Marli cleanser handles face makeup. Use a gentle, fragrance-free eye makeup remover for mascara, and never scrub the eye area.
